Creating Front Cover Masthead

 First of all to design my masthead, I had a basic font and had it in a solid black colour.



 I then had the idea of having the masthead have an effect that it would be crumbling down and breaking up, so I then used a special brush to do this as see in the picture above.



 Next I added the debris that was falling off the masthead, however I found that this was too overwhelming and the black seemed to be too plain.



 So I then got this textured background off the internet, and used it as texture for my masthead.



 Now that I finished adding the texture, all I had to do was remove the debris from the composition and add more realistic ones that match the texture of the font.



 Here I am adding the broken parts in the new textured font.


 I then play about with the debris part, trying to make it look as natural as possible.



Here is the final masthead, I found that by increasing my brush size allowed for bigger gaps between the pieces of debris making it look more natural and real.
